The header picture is of Red Castle in the high Uinta Wilderness. It’s a fairly long 10-11 mile hike in, but the scenery is second to none! Another Utah must do backpacking trip is Kings Peak! Utah’s highest point! This is typically a 3 day / 2 night trip. Hike in 9 miles the first day and set up base camp. Then climb Kings Peak the second day. Lastly pack out on the third day. This should be on every Utahn’s bucket list. While talking about the high Uinta’s we also like the hike into Allsop Lake, Brown Duck Basin, Amethyst Basin and Naturalist Basin. To access the high Uinta Wilderness all depends on what trail system you will be hiking. Trails on the west side are accessed out of Kamas on the Mirror Lake Highway. The north slope its easier to come in from Wyoming and from the south slope there are accesses from Duchensne to Vernal.
But then there is the Redrock and Slot Canyons of southern Utah! We prefer to do these ones in the spring and fall when the temps are a little cooler. Coyote Gulch Area is a must do. Along with many other options in Canyonlands and even Kodachrome state park. There is no shortage of options to backpack in Utah.
